Why Am I Bloated? And Why It's Not Your Fault

Why Am I Bloated? And Why It's Not Your Fault

By Lee Holmes Clinical Nutritionist | September 2026

If you've spent the afternoon with a stomach that feels like a balloon, you're not alone. Forty-two per cent of our customers specifically mention bloating relief as their top reason for trying Love Your Gut. This guide explains what causes bloating, why it persists, and the evidence-based strategies that work fastest.

Bloating isn't just uncomfortable. It's a signal that something in your digestive system needs attention. It could be inflammation, dysbiosis (imbalanced gut bacteria), food sensitivities, or simply the wrong type of fibre for your gut.

The good news: most bloating responds to targeted interventions within days, not weeks. In this guide, we'll explore:

  • What causes bloating (the surprising culprits most people miss)
  • Why your current approach might not be working
  • The evidence-based strategies that deliver results fastest
  • What 462 customers are seeing (and how quickly)

"I have been starting my days with a dose of this Gut Powder for the last 3 years or so. My bloating has reduced, it's helped my sensitive tummy issues (I am like clockwork now) and my skin has improved dramatically."

Root Cause Number One: Stress Is Quietly Wrecking Your Digestion

Let me tell you about Sarah. She came to me with chronic bloating that would start the moment she sat down at her desk. By the end of the workday, she'd gained what felt like five kilograms of water weight. She'd already tried cutting out gluten, dairy, and every suspect food. Nothing worked.

When I asked her about her stress levels, she laughed. "Lee, I'm not stressed. I'm a project manager. This is just my life."

But here's what happens when you're chronically stressed: your nervous system stays in a low-level fight or flight state. When that happens, your body essentially tells your digestive system: "We're under threat. Stop digesting. Save energy for running."

Your stomach acid production drops. Your intestinal muscles slow down. The bacteria in your gut start fermenting your food instead of you properly breaking it down. And that fermentation creates gas. Lots of it.

This isn't something you're imagining. The latest neurogastroenterology research shows that chronic stress fundamentally changes how your gut bacteria function and how quickly food moves through your system. One study from 2024 found that even moderate chronic stress reduced healthy bacterial diversity by up to 23 per cent in otherwise healthy adults.

The fix isn't complicated, but it does require you to interrupt the pattern. Your parasympathetic nervous system (the rest and digest part) needs to be activated. This means activating your nervous system with movement. Watch this simple yoga practice to activate your parasympathetic nervous system in under 10 minutes.

This simple yoga practice activates your parasympathetic nervous system in under 10 minutes. Do this once or twice daily, especially when you notice early bloating.

Pause Before Eating

Just three minutes. Sit down, breathe deeply (4 counts in, 6 counts out), and notice your surroundings. This single act tells your digestive system: "It's safe. We're not under threat." Your stomach acid production increases, your intestinal muscles relax, and digestion improves dramatically.

"I've always had mild digestive issues and tried every supplement I could find to fix it. This is the first thing I've tried that I could see/feel working. I noticed I wasn't as bloated as usual and I was more regular. I love that it's just one ingredient that does the job."

Root Cause Number Two: Your Timing Is Sabotaging Your Digestion

Here's what I see constantly in my clinic: women eating their largest meal at 8 or 9pm. They skip breakfast. They grab a quick lunch. Then dinner becomes this massive production of heavy food right before bed.

Your gut has a circadian rhythm just like your brain. It's designed to digest food early in the day, not late at night. When you eat heavy meals late, several things happen:

  • Your digestive enzymes are at their lowest (naturally)
  • Your intestinal motility (muscle contractions) slows down in preparation for sleep
  • Food sits in your stomach and small intestine longer, fermenting and creating gas
  • You go to bed bloated, which worsens reflux and disrupts sleep quality

The fix is simple but requires intention: eat your largest meal at lunch. Breakfast should be substantial. Dinner should be light and finished by 6 or 7pm, giving your body three to four hours to digest before sleep.

What's "light"? Think vegetables, lean protein, and healthy fats. Avoid heavy grains, large portions, and anything fried at dinner time. Your future self (and your stomach) will thank you.

"I have experienced daily, painful bloating for almost one year now, and have felt like my lower abdomen has been distended, even first thing in the morning. This powder has made a remarkable difference within days. Painful bloating is almost non-existent and my stomach is flatter and softer."

Root Cause Number Three: Food Sensitivity (Usually It's FODMAP)

Here's where I'm going to be gentle but honest: for about 40 per cent of the women I see with chronic bloating, it's food sensitivity. And more specifically, it's FODMAP.

FODMAP stands for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols. In plain English: these are carbohydrates that ferment rapidly in your gut, especially if your microbiota is imbalanced.

Common high-FODMAP foods include:

  • Onions and garlic (the biggest culprits)
  • Wheat and rye
  • Stone fruits (peaches, plums, nectarines)
  • Certain vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms)
  • Honey and sugar alcohols (sorbitol, xylitol)
  • Legumes (chickpeas, lentils)

This doesn't mean you need to eliminate these foods forever. It means: identify your trigger, eliminate it for two to three weeks, feel noticeably better, then reintroduce slowly once your microbiota is rebalanced.

The trick: don't do a FODMAP elimination diet without first rebalancing your gut bacteria. Otherwise, you're just treating a symptom. You're not fixing the root cause.

"I'm a newbie (and a natural sceptic) but after half a pack of this powder I can feel the difference. Especially less bloating and gas and energy."

Root Cause Number Four: Dysbiosis (Your Gut Bacteria Are Out of Balance)

This is the one that ties everything together. Dysbiosis (an imbalance between beneficial and harmful bacteria) doesn't just cause bloating. It causes all three of the above to worsen.

When dysbiosis is present:

  • Stress impacts your gut harder (your good bacteria can't buffer the damage)
  • Food ferments faster and more intensely (even small amounts create noticeable gas)
  • Your gut lining weakens (you become more sensitive to more foods)

The solution isn't complicated, but the order matters. You can't just add probiotics or fibre. You need to:

Step 1: Rebalance Your Microbiota

This is where Love Your Gut (diatomaceous earth) becomes important. Diatomaceous earth works because it's antimicrobially active. It helps rebalance bacteria populations by reducing harmful species while beneficial ones recover. Most people report noticeably less bloating and more regular bowel movements within 24 to 72 hours.

Step 2: Support Your Gut Lining

Once dysbiosis is addressed, the next step is to heal the gut lining. This is where minerals like silica become important. The silica in diatomaceous earth is bioavailable and supports collagen synthesis, which strengthens the gut barrier. A stronger barrier means better digestion and fewer food sensitivities.

Step 3: Sustain With the Right Fibre

Once your gut is rebalanced, the fibre you choose matters enormously. You need a mix of soluble and insoluble fibre that feeds your now-healthy bacterial communities without causing fermentation distress. This is why a whole-food fibre blend matters more than a single fibre like psyllium.

"I bought the supercharge gut powder to try because I have issues with feeling bloated and sick after eating. Since taking this powder I feel great and no longer have previous problem. My sister is also taking it now and has helped her as well."

The Solution That Brings It All Together

I've worked with thousands of women, and here's what I've discovered: bloating rarely has one single cause. It's usually a combination of stress plus timing plus food sensitivity plus dysbiosis. Which means the solution needs to address all four.

This is why the Bloating Begone Bundle exists. I kept seeing the same pattern: women who tried one product, then another, then another, never getting the full picture. Together, they work.

Your Questions, Answered

How long does it take to reduce bloating?

Most of my patients see improvement within three to five days once they identify the trigger. Full microbiome rebalancing takes four to eight weeks, but many women feel dramatically better within the first two weeks.

Is bloating dangerous?

Occasional bloating is completely normal. Chronic, daily bloating can signal dysbiosis, food intolerance, or digestive stress. If it's persistent and nothing changes it, that's worth discussing with a healthcare provider.

Can probiotics actually reduce bloating?

Yes, but only if dysbiosis is the actual cause. A balanced microbiome plus prebiotic fibre (like All The Fibres) creates lasting relief. But probiotics alone without the other lifestyle changes won't fix it.

What if nothing works?

If bloating persists after four weeks of addressing all four root causes, you might have a food intolerance beyond FODMAP (such as histamine sensitivity) or a motility disorder. This warrants investigation with your healthcare provider or a gastroenterologist.

Can I take these supplements if I'm pregnant?

Some, yes; some, no. Always discuss with your healthcare provider before starting any new supplement during pregnancy. Diatomaceous earth and certain fibres are generally considered safe, but pregnancy deserves individualised advice.
